BENGALURU: It looks like Google and Sony are worlds apart when it comes to making decisions about what gadgets people should use and what not. The perfect example popped up today when the Japanese tech giant Sony launched a pair of smart glasses just a week after Google decided to scrap the public sale of the same.
Sony’s eyewear dubbed SmartEyeglass will hit the stores in the US, Japan, Germany, and UK on March 10 and is expected to cost $762, which is cheaper than Google Glass, that was sold for $1,500 initially.
The sale of Google Glass was terminated indefinitely and there is no official word from Google if they plan to bring the product back into the market. It came on the backdrop of tech geeks debating whether people will ever feel at ease using a smart gadget on their face.
According to a report, Sony’s SmartEyeglass has similar features found in Google Glass. It can sync with Sony smartphones to display text, images and information related to location on its screen without obstructing the vision of the user.
While Google Glass looked sleek and almost similar to the daily used eyewear (despite having a computer component towards the right side of the frame), Sony’s SmartEyeglass is a little too big covering the eye socket and comes with a slightly bigger frame.
Sony is expected to release a new kit for the device soon that may allow developers to make new android apps of the SmartEyeglass.
Earlier, Android app developers had made a slew of apps for Google Glass – giving emphasis to the display notification that appear on-screen, a technique followed by smart watches. But, these developments have been stalled as Google put an end to Google Glass in the experimental stage.
Now we have to wait and see whether Sony can succeed where Google failed.
