Rohit Chopra is the Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), an agency he helped set up after its enactment in the 2010 Dodd-Frank legislation.
The U.S. Senate confirmed him in October 2022.
Born in 1982, the economist and public servant is known for his dedicated advocacy in consumer protection and financial regulation. A graduate of Harvard College, where he studied economics, he furthered his education at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, earning a master’s degree in business administration.
Chopra’s commitment to consumer rights and financial fairness became evident early in his career. He gained recognition during his tenure as Assistant Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, where he played a key role in the agency’s establishment following the 2008 financial crisis. Before joining the CFPB, Chopra served as Special Advisor to the Secretary of Education, working on matters related to student loans. Chopra was appointed as the Director of CFPB by President Joe Biden in April 2021.
