The United States is headed towards another recession if big players in Wall Street are to be believed. Goldman Sachs has raised the odds of a U.S. recession to 45% from 35%, the second time it has increased its forecast in a week amid a growing chorus of such predictions by investment banks due to an escalating trade war.
If the U.S. experiences another recession in 2025, it could lead to rising unemployment, lower consumer spending, and decreased business investment. Economic growth would likely slow, impacting wages and job stability.
The Federal Reserve might lower interest rates or implement stimulus measures to counteract the downturn. Stock markets could see significant volatility, and consumer confidence may drop. While some sectors, like technology or essential services, might remain stable, others, such as retail and manufacturing, could suffer more. A recession would also strain government resources, possibly leading to increased public debt as fiscal support measures are enacted.

These forecasts are being made in light of President Donald Trump’s escalating tariff wars against trade partners. Following Goldman Sachs, at least seven top investment banks have raised their recession risk forecasts, with J.P.Morgan putting the odds of a U.S. and global recession at 60%, on fears that the tariffs will not only ignite U.S. inflation but also spark retaliatory measures from other countries, as China has already announced.
On April 4, China announced a 34% tariff on all U.S. imports, set to take effect on April 10. This action mirrors the U.S.’s recent tariff hike on Chinese goods. Additionally, China has blacklisted 11 American companies, demanding that the U.S. lift its unilateral measures.
