Google CEO Sundar Pichai has revealed during the company’s second quarter call with investors that AI Overviews now has 2 billion monthly users, up from 1.5 billion in May. AI Overviews is a Google Search feature that offers an AI-generated summary of search results. This feature is currently available in 200 countries and territories.
Pichai also revealed that Google’s Gemini app has grown to 450 million monthly active users. “We continue to see strong growth and engagement with daily requests growing over 50% from Q1,” Pichai said about the app.

Meanwhile AI mode, a way to get in-depth answers from Google Search using an AI chat experience, now has over 100 million active users, according to Pichai. The CEO said that this experience will be upgraded in the near future with the addition of DeepSearch, an advanced research tool, and more personalized responses.
Google also revealed that over 9 million developers have used Gemini, and over 70 million videos have been produced with the Veo 3 AI model since May. Google Vids, a Veo-powered feature for text-to-video AI generation in Google Workspace, now has nearly 1 million monthly active users. Over 50 million people have used AI-powered meeting notes in Google Meet.
These numbers are meant to show the level of consumer demand for AI features. Google has also shared that AI Overviews were driving over 10% more Google Search queries for the types of searches that show them. However, it is hard to determine how much is organic, considering this feature has been thrust upon customers quite aggressively.
“We are seeing significant demand for our comprehensive AI product portfolio,” Pichai told investors. “Of course, this is all possible because of the long-term investments we have made in our differentiated, full-stack approach to AI.” Investors, however, have reacted negatively to Google’s AI spending plans, resulting in a decline in stocks following the earnings call.

Google’s rollout of AI overview and AI mode have raised concerns about their impact on website traffic. According to a report by Pew Research Center, users shown an AI-generated summary of the search results are less likely to click on the URLs that appear below the overview. Those who encounter an AI Overview only click on a website URL 8% of the time, while it is 15% for those who don’t encounter the same. Online publishers and content creators have been concerned about the loss in online traffic due to this.
According to the Pew report, over 18% of all Google searches analyzed by the study led to an AI-generated summary being shown to users. The majority of these summaries (88%) have cited three or more sources.
