Alexandr Wang, the head of Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL), sent an internal email outlining Meta’s massive restructuring plans in pursuit of “superintelligence.”
According to a report by the Business Insider, the reorganization splits MSL into four teams — TBD Lab, FAIR, Products & Applied Research, and MSL Infra. The memo also stated that most of Meta’s senior leaders in the AI ecosystem will now report to Wang. This includes high profile names like former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman, who will lead product integration, and engineering veteran Aparna Ramani, who will oversee infrastructure.
Wang wrote in the email that “superintelligence is coming,” and to “take it seriously,” Meta needs to make major changes. He also warned that organizational changes can be “disruptive,” but said it’s necessary to increase how fast Meta can achieve superintelligence, which is when AI surpasses humans in virtually any intellectual field.

Meta is centralizing research across two units — TBD Lab, a small team focused on training large AI models, and FAIR, Meta’s long-standing AI research organization, according to Wang’s email. TBD will be led by ChatGPT co-creator Shengjia Zhao, who’s the only leader Wang doesn’t mention reporting directly to him. TBD will also be in charge of exploring new directions, including building an “omni” model. The email does not elaborate on what the “omni” model would entail.
The email states FAIR will be an “innovation engine” for MSL’s training runs by feeding its research directly to TBD Lab. This is a more active role for FAIR than before. FAIR is known for publishing higher-level AI research and giving its employees a level of independence similar to academia. In the past, there has been relatively little transfer between FAIR and Meta’s AI division but that seems to be changing.

Wang’s email also states that Nat Friedman will lead MSL’s efforts to “integrate AI into Meta’s products.” The email made it clear that Friedman will report to Wang. Meanwhile, MSL’s infra team will be led by Ramani, a longtime Meta engineering VP whose LinkedIn profile says she leads all of Meta’s AI infrastructure. The memo also stated that Meta is dissolving its AGI foundations team, which it created back in May.
Wang was previously the CEO of Scale AI. He joined Meta earlier this year when Meta made a $14.3 billion investment in the startup. Since then, Wang played a major role in Meta’s superintelligence efforts.
