At least one person was shot during an encounter with federal agents in South Minneapolis early Saturday, according to state and local officials as well as video recorded by witnesses.
Footage captured from a nearby business shows roughly six agents restraining a man on the ground when a gunshot can be heard.
Moments later, at least one agent appears to fire several rounds in the direction of the man while he remains on the ground.
The latest shooting is likely to escalate already high tensions over the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement efforts in the Twin Cities, where federal agents have been carrying out a major crackdown. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said he spoke with the White House about the incident and called it another “sickening” use of force by federal officers. He urged the president to end the current operation and pull federal agents out of Minnesota.
“The President must end this operation,” he wrote. “Pull the thousands of violent, untrained officers out of Minnesota. Now.”
City officials in Minneapolis posted on X that they were aware of reports of a shooting involving federal law enforcement early Saturday near 26th Street West and Nicollet Avenue and said they were working to confirm the details. They asked residents to remain calm and to avoid the immediate area while the situation continued to unfold.
As per the Department of Homeland Security, the person involved in the Minneapolis incident was armed with a firearm, and officials say a gun and two magazines were recovered at the scene. Federal authorities have said the individual opened fire on officers before the shooting occurred, but many details about exactly how the confrontation began are still unclear.
This incident comes amid ongoing protests and unrest since earlier federal encounters in the city, including a fatal shooting earlier this month that drew national attention.
Several bystanders can be seen filming the scene as federal agents force the man to the ground.

A Trump administration official said the individual was carrying a firearm, which authorities say was recovered at the location. The extent of the person’s injuries was not immediately known.
The shooting unfolded just a day after thousands of people took to the streets of Minneapolis to protest the ongoing immigration operation. In a show of solidarity, hundreds of businesses across the Twin Cities shut their doors for the day.
Federal authorities have continued to stand by both the operation and the actions of their agents, saying the presence of demonstrators and onlookers has interfered with enforcement efforts and created additional safety risks.
At this point, there is no confirmed update on the person’s condition. Local officials have said they are continuing to investigate the situation as more information becomes available.
