Authorities have released a horrifying recording of a 911 call involving an Indian American
paediatrician, Neha Gupta, residing in Oklahoma, who was charged with murder last year for the
death of her four-year-old daughter Aria.
Gupta claims that her daughter was in the pool unresponsive, according to the conversation she had
with a 911 dispatcher on 27 June 2025. “She was in the pool, I tried to save her, but I don’t know…”
she says.
Despite the dispatcher repeatedly urging her to remove the child from the pool, Gupta goes on to
say her daughter had gotten into the pool while she was asleep and that they needed to “get her
out,” without making any efforts to do it herself.
Upon conducting medical examinations, officials reported that the four-year-old had “dry lungs,”
signalling that if the girl had drowned like her mother claims, they would have found water in her
lungs. This discrepancy, along with physical evidence, raised immediate concerns of murder. Given
the bruises and the condition of her lungs, investigators believe the child was smothered before she
ever touched the water.
Gupta was arrested at her house in Oklahoma and was extradited to Florida to be presented in court
in May. She remains in custody at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center without bond,
facing a charge of first-degree premeditated murder.
Detectives found a potential motive as they dug deeper into Gupta’s family background. The
investigation revealed that she was locked in a nasty custody battle with her ex-husband and was
unemployed at the time, having recently lost her medical position.
The loss of her career and the fear of losing her child to her ex-husband might have been a breaking
point, it seems that Aria’s father had raised concerns about Gupta’s mental health and had no
knowledge that his daughter was taken to Florida according to court reports.
The case continues to move through the Florida court system as prosecutors build their argument
for premeditated murder. A trial date has not yet been set, and Gupta’s defence team has not issued
a public statement regarding the newly released 911 evidence. If convicted, the former doctor faces
life in prison or the death penalty.
