The University of Chicago has presented its Alumni Award for Professional Achievement to Professor Krishnamurthy V. Subramanian, marking the first time an Indian economist has received the honor in the award’s 85-year history.
Subramanian, who served as the 17th Chief Economic Adviser to the Government of India and currently represents the country as an Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund, joins an elite lineage of past recipients.
Since its inception in 1941, the award has been granted to global luminaries, including 14 Nobel laureates such as Paul Samuelson and Claudia Goldin, as well as scientific pioneers like Carl Sagan.
The university’s citation highlighted Subramanian’s landmark Economic Surveys, which were credited with building the intellectual framework for India’s self-reliance. During his tenure from 2018 to 2021, he navigated the country through the unprecedented supply-side shocks of the COVID-19 pandemic. His early diagnosis of the crisis and public projection of a “V-shaped” recovery were noted for anchoring public and investor confidence during a period of global volatility.
“To be included in this academic lineage is profoundly humbling,” Subramanian said in a statement. He emphasized that the recognition was particularly meaningful because it celebrated work “done from India and for India.” He noted the privilege of following the path of Indian pioneers like C.V. Raman and Vikram Sarabhai, who conducted their most significant work within their home country.

Unlike many previous honorees who primarily operated within Western academic institutions, Subramanian’s recognized contributions were forged in the high-stakes environment of emerging market policymaking.
His “Thalinomics” concept, an Indian adaptation of the Big Mac Index and his use of behavioral “nudges” to improve welfare delivery have been praised for making complex economics accessible to the public.
With this latest accolade, the Chicago Booth alumnus has now been honored with distinguished alumni awards from all three of his alma maters: the University of Chicago, the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, and the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta.
Subramanian currently serves as a Professor of Finance at the Indian School of Business. He is also the author of “India@100,” a roadmap for the nation’s economic trajectory toward its centenary in 2047.
