At the 98th Academy Awards in 2026, Priyanka Chopra Jonas found herself at the center of an online debate after a brief on-stage moment with co-presenter Javier Bardem drew outsized attention.
The two actors had stepped out to present the Best International Feature Film award, which went to Norway’s “Sentimental Value.” But before opening the envelope, Bardem made a political statement, saying, “No to War and Free Palestine.”
Wearing a “No to War” pin on his lapel, Bardem’s remark was met with loud applause inside the Dolby Theatre. Chopra Jonas stood beside him, nodding as he spoke, before the duo moved ahead with the announcement.

The moment, however, quickly took on a life of its own online. Clips began circulating across social media, with some users fixating on Chopra Jonas’ reaction. A section of viewers described her expression as restrained or awkward, with a few calling it a “meek smile” and questioning why she did not respond more visibly, especially given her global profile and role as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.
Others also weighed in on the pairing itself, suggesting it felt mismatched, considering Bardem’s history of outspoken political commentary and Chopra Jonas’s more measured public positioning. Some users speculated that the statement may not have been discussed beforehand.
One of the users commented, “Meet Priyanka Chopra – She’s being introduced as jonas brother(s) wife on oscar stage😭- all this bollywood defamation for sympathy just to be treated like this? And why tf this Dal gadot looks pissed off when javier said ‘free palestine?’..show more.”

Another user commented, “just saw someone call Priyanka Chopra ‘Daal Gadot’ on this app and my faith in humanity has been restored 😭”
“Priyanka Chopra is so fake with a carefully planned PR image that tries to benefit from the western liberal ideas of feminism & diversity while also supporting the right-wing Hindutva govt at home.
I guess her PR team didn’t tell her how to react to this, hence her awkward smile,” while the other wrote.
At the same time, many came to Chopra Jonas’ defence, pointing out that a short on-stage moment does not necessarily reflect a person’s views. Past interviews and social media posts related to global conflicts also resurfaced, with supporters noting that she has previously spoken about humanitarian concerns, including those linked to Palestine.
