Vidya Bommanapally was named Tech Innovator of the Year at the 2026 Women in Tech Annual Summit organized by the Aksarben Foundation’s Nebraska Tech Collaborative.
Bommanapally, a PhD candidate in computing and information science at the University of Nebraska Omaha, decided to use the surge of AI technology for good by applying it in real-world scenarios to address real-world problems.
The award recognizes her contributions and cutting-edge technology research skills at such a young age and early stage of her career. Bommanapally’s primary focus is on a cross-domain approach in research and innovation, combining artificial intelligence across platforms such as health, education and materials science applications.
Bommanapally’s invention started as an algorithm to help people from different backgrounds learn at their own pace, which later gave her the idea to use AI for larger, real-world platforms for greater impact, she says in an interview posted on Aksarben Foundation website.
Originally from India, Bommanapally is part of a growing cohort of Indian students contributing to advanced AI research in the United States. She holds three years of software industry experience as a developer, working with technologies including C++, Java, Python, HTML and server-side JavaScript.

Her academic work focuses on areas such as computer vision, deep learning and self-supervised learning, with ongoing research examining biomaterial image analysis.
Her recognition reflects both technical innovation and the broader applicability of her research. According to the Women in Tech program, the award honors individuals whose work leads to “groundbreaking technologies” that address complex challenges and advance their fields.
Bommanapally credited her academic environment and mentors for supporting her work. She also acknowledged the role of the College of Information Science and Technology in fostering student growth and innovation, and thanked the Aksarben Foundation for promoting women in technology.
The Women in Tech Summit annually brings together professionals, researchers and students from across Nebraska’s technology ecosystem, with a focus on elevating women leaders and innovators in the field. The Innovator of the Year award is among its top honors, spotlighting individuals whose work shows exceptional promise early in their careers.
Bommanapally’s achievement not only underscores the increasing role of interdisciplinary AI research in solving real-world problems, it also highlights the contributions of Indian-origin scholars to the U.S. technology and research landscape, particularly in emerging fields that bridge science, engineering and societal impact.
As she continues her doctoral work, Bommanapally is expected to expand her research into practical applications that can influence industries ranging from healthcare diagnostics to advanced materials development.
