Celebrities with large number of followers consider it a boon, but for Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor things went haywire as she used the word “misogynistic” in a tweet that criticized a week-long meat ban in Mumbai, causing a twitter onslaught against her.
The Mumbai government that has already banned sales of beef in the state announced that slaughter and sales of all kinds of meat will be banned for a week owing to a Jain festival of fasting.
The actress, who is vocal of ideas and views, retweeted a news report about the meat ban and wrote, “Our country is going to remain a 3rd world nation because of the intolerant misogynistic close minded few.”
With close to 7 million followers, her tweet instantly came under attack of twitter users who found the word misogyny totally unrelated to the current meat ban.
After finding in the middle of a thousand critics, Sonam took many hours to convince them about what her real intent was, explaining to them how the Indian society is in general. But it turned out that her each tweet fuelled more discussion, adding more critics to the discussion.
Sonam boldly faced all the initial criticisms but after a while she lost her cool and wrote, “What I said was a critique of the general mentality. Which is not exclusive to the banning of meat.”
A few women users also came in support of her critics, which again infuriated the Raanjhanaa actress. She wrote, “And the saddest thing about this whole thing is.. That it’s mostly women who are calling me out on being bimbo. Guess it’s not only the men!”
But at last feeling defeated, the actress ended up calling everybody who replied to her “assholes” and “morons.” Later, Sonam wrote that she would tweet only about topics in which she is an expert.
