Tata Electronics announced on Jan. 24 that it has acquired a 60% stake in Pegatron Technology India Private Limited — a subsidiary of Taiwanese electronics manufacturing giant Pegatron Corporation.
Pegatron operates three iPhone production plants in India, including one near Chennai, followed Tata’s acquisition of the Indian subsidiary of Wistron — another Taiwanese smartphone-assembly plant in January 2024. Wistron’s facility in Narsapura, Karnataka, also assembled iPhones.
While the financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, Tata said Pegatron’s acquisition fits into its strategy of growing its manufacturing footprint. Randhir Thakur, CEO and managing director of Tata Electronics said, “We look forward to a new era of AI, digital and technology-led manufacturing as we bring up these new facilities and expand our operations in India.”

This acquisition will significantly narrow the gap between the production values of Tata Electronics and its competitor Foxconn, in assembling iPhones for Apple Inc.
According to vendor data submitted to the government in 2024, Foxconn accounted for 56% of total production value, while Tata Electronics accounted for 26%, and the remainder was accounted for by Pegatron.
With the latest acquisition, Tata’s share in production value is set to rise to 44%. It is also expected to add to Tata’s workforce, with adding 17,000 direct employees from Pegatron and increasing its total direct workforce to 48,000.
This expansion lets Tata Electronics capture a larger share of iPhone exports. In 2024, the company’s share of total iPhone exports from India stood at 29%, and it is now expected to increase to 48% with Pegatron’s share.
