Meta has unveiled a standalone AI app at the company’s LlamaCon event on Tuesday. This app allows users to access Meta AI via an app, similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Meta — which has already integrated its AI into Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook, and Messenger applications — is trying to leverage what makes it different from competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic. Unlike other AI companies, Meta already has an idea about its users’ tastes and preferences based on data they’ve collected via Facebook and Instagram.
Meta’s AI app can differentiate itself from existing AI assistants because it can “draw on information you’ve already chosen to share on Meta products,” the company said. Right now, these personalized responses are available in the U.S. and Canada.

Users can also give Meta additional information about themselves to remember for their next conversation with AI. However, it has also been noted that like with other AI products, users need to be wary of how much data they share within these apps.
Meta’s AI app makes use of Meta’s Llama 4 model, which was released earlier this month and has been touted by Meta as being more cost-efficient than competitor models like Gemini, ChatGPT and DeepSeek. It gives users access to image generation, image editing and a voice mode that can be used to interact with while using other apps on a device. The AI app would also have a “discover” feed which would allow users to see how others are using the assistant.

Other tech companies which have previously launched standalone AI apps include OpenAI (ChatGPT), Google (Gemini), Microsoft (Copilot) and Anthropic (Claude). Elon Musk’s xAI launched a standalone app for its Grok chatbot in January. While Meta has been relatively late in launching a standalone AI app, it has featured its AI assistant across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp since 2023, allowing its AI models to be trained with more content. Meta’s AI assistant garnered nearly 600 million monthly users as of December 2024, according to Meta.
