An Indian student who has recently graduated with a master’s degree in the United States died while rescuing his friends from drowning at a reservoir near the Texas-Louisiana border.
According to media reports, the victim was identified as Anurup Reddy Koduru, 23, from Abdullapurmet in the outskirts of Hyderabad, died on May 29 at Toledo Bend Reservoir while on an outing with friends. The group was reportedly spending time near the water when three of his friends found themselves in distress and struggled to stay afloat.
Witnesses said Koduru immediately jumped into the water to help. He was able to bring all the friends to safety, but faced difficulties while attempting to return to the shore himself. It was indicated through the report that his leg became entangled in a fishing net or line, preventing him from escaping the strong currents.

Emergency responders launched a search and rescue operation after he disappeared underwater. His body was later recovered and taken to a nearby hospital, where authorities declared him dead.
The tragedy came just days after Koduru completed his master’s degree in Computer Science from the University of North Texas. Family members said he had recently graduated and was preparing to begin a promising professional career in the United States after reportedly securing a job opportunity with a technology company.
His family members described him as a dedicated student and a caring son who remained closely connected with loved ones despite living abroad. His father said Koduru spoke with the family regularly and had always been focused on his education and future goals. His mother described him as a “soldier” who sacrificed his life to save others, while his brother called him a true hero whose final act reflected his character and willingness to help those in need.

Before moving to the United States for higher studies, Koduru completed his engineering degree at Guru Nanak Institutions in Hyderabad.
The Consulate General of India in Houston expressed condolences to the family and said it was providing assistance in coordinating necessary procedures through a post on X. Efforts are underway to bring his body to Hyderabad, India where his family members and loved ones are expected to pay their final respects.
While his death was tragic, Koduru is being remembered for a final act of courage that saved three lives.
