WhatsApp is expanding its calling experience to the web, allowing users to make and receive voice and video calls directly from a browser without installing the desktop app. To showcase the rollout, WhatsApp head Kunal Shah shared a screenshot of a video call with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, offering a first look at the new feature in action.
Posting on X, Shah wrote, “WhatsApp calls now work in your browser. Your 47 open Chrome tabs finally got company that’s actually useful.”
The image shows a WhatsApp video call running inside a Google Chrome window, with Zuckerberg on the call and Shah appearing in a smaller video tile. The update means users can now place calls through WhatsApp Web on browsers such as Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge and Safari.

Until now, voice and video calling on a computer required users to download the WhatsApp desktop application. With the latest update, those calls can be made directly from web.whatsapp.com after linking a phone to the browser.
How to make calls on WhatsApp Web
- Open WhatsApp Web in your preferred browser.
- Scan the QR code using your phone to link your account.
- Open an individual or group chat.
- Tap the voice or video call icon to begin the call.

The browser-based calling experience includes many of the same features available on the desktop and mobile apps. Users can make one-on-one and group voice or video calls, share their screen, react with emojis during calls and access a dedicated Calls tab.
Alongside browser calling, Shah also announced three additional calling enhancements coming to WhatsApp.
In another post on X, he said users can now move an ongoing group call between devices without disconnecting using the new Call Transfer feature.
WhatsApp is also introducing a Waiting Room, giving hosts the ability to approve participants before they join a group call. Another addition is Background Noise Suppression, which helps reduce surrounding noise and improve call quality in noisy environments.
