Starbucks plans to close approximately 250 coffeehouses across North America later this week, the company said on Thursday, marking its second major round of store closures since Brian Niccol became CEO in 2024.
The company said the locations were identified during a review of its North American coffeehouse portfolio.
Starbucks Chief Operating Officer Mike Grams said some of the stores were not delivering acceptable financial results, while others could not consistently provide the experience the company wants for customers and employees.
The roughly 250 closures represent about 1% of Starbucks’ more than 18,000 North American coffeehouses, according to Grams’ letter to employees.
Starbucks did not disclose during its Thursday announcement about how many of the affected locations are in the United States or provide a complete list of stores scheduled to close.
The announcement comes about a year after Starbucks closed 627 stores across North America and Europe and eliminated approximately 900 non-retail positions.
Those decisions were announced in September 2025 as part of the company’s broader “Back to Starbucks” strategy.
Starbucks has been working to change and update its coffeehouses as part of that strategy. Grams said the company expects to complete 1,500 coffeehouse “uplifts” by Sept. 30, the end of its fiscal year, and that the work has provided the company with a clearer view of individual coffeehouse performance.
The company also said it remains committed to growing its North American store count but at the same time, it is closing locations that it says do not meet its financial or customer-experience expectations.
The company has not released a complete official list of all stores being closed or disclosed how many of the approximately 250 locations are in the United States. However, 13WTHR published a list of locations confirmed for closure.

13WTHR said the list will be updated as additional locations are confirmed.
For employees at stores scheduled to close, Starbucks said it will seek to transfer workers to other locations when possible. Employees who cannot be placed at another store will receive severance support, according to the company.
The company also has not disclosed how many of the affected stores have unionized workers. More than 700 U.S. Starbucks stores have voted to unionize since late 2021, while the company and Starbucks Workers United have yet to reach a labor agreement.
