California Governor Gavin Newsom has appointed Indian American civic and tech leader Ajay Bhutoria to the California Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists.
Operating under the California Department of Consumer Affairs, the board regulates engineering, land surveying and geology in the state. Its responsibilities include setting licensing standards and overseeing professional practices intended to protect life, health, property and public welfare.
Bhutoria, a Fremont resident, has more than two decades of experience in enterprise technology, software architecture and public service. Since 2006, he has served as founder and principal of Global Business Consulting Services, advising Fortune 500 companies and public sector institutions on digital transformation, human resources technology and enterprise system administration.

Bhutoria said he plans to bring his experience in artificial intelligence, emerging technologies and process improvement to the board.

Bhutoria was appointed by President Joe Biden to the President’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders, serving from 2022 to 2025.
Prior to his White House advisory service, Bhutoria established himself as a Silicon Valley technology leader, author, national community leader, and civic advocate.

His political leadership includes service on the Obama National Finance Committee, as Co-Chair of the Asian American Council Finance Committee for Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign, on the National Finance Committee for Joe Biden’s 2020 campaign, and on the Harris for President National Finance Committee in 2024.
He has spearheaded national multilingual voter outreach, championed domestic H-1B visa renewal reforms, advocated for immigrant civil rights across the United States, helped launch the White House AANHPI Economic Summit series, and worked to strengthen small-business growth and the U.S.–India relationship.
Bhutoria earned a Bachelor of Technology degree in Chemical Engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli.
