Indian American researcher Mukund Padmanabhan has been named UCLA Samueli School of Engineering’s 2026 Alum of the Year, celebrating a career defined by technical innovation, quantitative finance leadership, and widespread philanthropic impact.
An Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur graduate, Padmanabhan earned his master’s degree in 1989 and his doctoral degree in 1992, both in electrical engineering from the University of California Los Angeles.
Following his doctoral studies, Padmanabhan joined the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center. During his tenure there, he specialized in speech processing and led research and development for speech-recognition algorithms.

His scientific work in signal processing resulted in more than 80 technical papers and over 20 U.S. patents. He later transitioned into the financial sector, bringing his mathematical and statistical background to quantitative investment.
Padmanabhan serves as a partner and statistical researcher at Renaissance Technologies, a New York-based quantitative investment firm, where he applies his analytical expertise to financial modeling.
Alongside his professional achievements, Padmanabhan maintains a strong commitment to charitable causes. Through the Guru Krupa Foundation, he supports initiatives in education, social welfare, culture, and environmental conservation and these philanthropic programs serve students and families in both the United States and India, reflecting his ongoing ties to his homeland.

Padmanabhan is also deeply involved with his alma mater as a member of the UCLA Samueli Dean’s Executive Board. His financial contributions have significantly supported campus development, including funding for the Engineering VI building. That building features a systems scaling laboratory named in his honor that supports semiconductor research.
Additionally, his gifts to the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department established four endowed faculty term chairs supporting research in plasma physics, neuroengineering, and cyber-physical systems, as well as three graduate fellowships and an endowment for undergraduate scholarships.
Previously, Padmanabhan received the UCLA Samueli Professional Achievement Award in 2019 and the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2021 from IIT Kharagpur.
