Indiana University has appointed Rahul Shrivastav as vice president for student success, formalizing his appointment after he served in the interim role beginning in February.
Shrivastav most recently served as provost of the IU Bloomington campus. In his new position, he will lead university-wide efforts to improve the student experience across IU’s nine campuses, overseeing enrollment services, academic and curricular processes, and student support programs.
IU President Pamela Whitten said Shrivastav’s experience with enrollment and the development of academic and student support programs positioned him to lead the university’s efforts to help more students complete their degrees and prepare for their careers.
Working with campus leaders, faculty members and student support professionals, Shrivastav will help identify barriers to student achievement, strengthen support systems and advance approaches intended to help students remain on track toward graduation. His responsibilities will also include continuing to lead Indiana University’s university-wide artificial intelligence initiatives.

“Indiana University has invested heavily in creating extraordinary opportunities for students,” Shrivastav said. “Our responsibility now is to ensure that every student can fully benefit from these opportunities and graduate ready to create value wherever their lives and careers take them.”
According to the university, this work will involve curricular innovation, changes to teaching and assessment practices, experiential learning and updates to student support services.
The initiatives will also address how technology could help IU provide more personalized and proactive assistance throughout students’ academic journeys. Another focus will be preparing students for careers increasingly affected by artificial intelligence.
Shrivastav said the university’s responsibility is to ensure students can benefit from the opportunities available to them and graduate prepared to contribute through their careers and lives.
During his tenure as provost at IU Bloomington, Shrivastav helped lead enrollment growth and launched 25 academic programs aligned with student interests and workforce demand.
He also worked to expand faculty expertise in fields including bioengineering, cybersecurity, microelectronics, artificial intelligence and machine learning, and quantum information science.
