American investment firm Blackstone has drawn attention online after opening its second office in India, reflecting a growing debate over American companies expanding their operations overseas at a time when Indian Americans are facing rising hostility in the United States.
The New York-based alternative investment management firm has opened a Global Capability Center (GCC) in Bengaluru to strengthen its operations and support its businesses worldwide. The move has triggered criticism on social media, with some users questioning whether Washington’s crackdown on foreign workers is doing enough to protect American jobs when U.S. companies can shift operations to countries such as India.
One post on X highlighted the scale of Blackstone’s expansion, noting that the company had leased 452,225 square feet for its new center. The facility currently employs around 80 people, with the company’s chief financial officer reportedly targeting a workforce of more than 100 by the end of the year.

The center will handle corporate functions for Blackstone’s businesses in India and globally, including finance, technology, human resources, legal affairs and compliance. The firm already has an office in Mumbai, where its India investment team is based. Blackstone also co-owns the office park housing the new facility through its real estate business.
The expansion has drawn particular attention as the Trump administration continues to face debate over H-1B visas and the employment of foreign workers in the United States.
Hany Girgis, co-founder of SkillStorm, a technology workforce solutions company, questioned the contrast between restrictions on foreign workers in America and the expansion of American businesses in India.
“WHILE WASHINGTON CRACKS DOWN ON H-1B VISAS, TWO MORE AMERICAN FINANCIAL FIRMS ARE EXPANDING OPERATIONS IN INDIA,” Girgis wrote on X.
He pointed to Blackstone’s new Bengaluru center and AssetMark’s recently opened facility in Hyderabad, which is designed to accommodate approximately 500 employees and has begun hiring for engineering and technology positions.
Girgis argued that while H-1B restrictions can limit companies’ ability to hire foreign workers in the United States, they do not prevent businesses from establishing entire teams overseas
“Are we protecting American jobs, or simply making it easier for companies to move the work abroad?” he asked.
The debate reflects a broader tension in the American job market. While restrictions on immigration and foreign-worker visas are often presented as measures to protect domestic employment, companies can continue to hire workers in other countries when doing so suits their business strategies and cost structures.
One X user pushed back against the criticism of companies expanding into India, arguing that businesses would naturally seek lower costs and higher profits.
“Companies do whatever it takes to lower their costs and earn profits,” the user wrote, questioning why a wealthy country such as the United States would object to job creation in a country with a much lower per-capita income.
The user also criticized U.S. spending on overseas wars, arguing that rising oil prices were making life more difficult for India.
Blackstone’s expansion comes as India continues to attract global companies seeking to establish Global Capability Centers. These facilities typically manage functions such as technology development, financial operations, research, human resources and compliance for multinational businesses.

The controversy also showcased a complicated aspect of the debate surrounding Indian Americans and the U.S. economy. Indian professionals have faced growing scrutiny in discussions about immigration, outsourcing and competition for American jobs. At the same time, American companies continue to invest in India, creating jobs and expanding their business operations there.
For critics of overseas expansion, the concern is whether restricting immigration will actually protect American employment if companies can move more work abroad. For businesses, however, decisions about where to operate are often driven by costs, access to skilled workers and the need to support global operations.
Blackstone’s Bengaluru expansion has therefore become part of a larger conversation about who benefits from America’s immigration and economic policies, and whether restrictions on foreign workers can achieve their stated goals while American companies continue to expand internationally.
Blackstone’s first office in India is located in Mumbai, at Express Towers in Nariman Point, which serves as the firm’s India headquarters. The company established its presence in the country about two decades ago, and its investment professionals will continue to operate from Mumbai even as the new Bengaluru office supports its global operations.
