Indian American Shelby Kutty was appointed as vice president and chief academic officer of BayCare Health System in Clearwater, Florida, announced in a press release on Jan. 31.
Kutty, who previously served as the Helen Taussig Professor, Director of Congenital Cardiology, and chaired the analytic intelligence program at Johns Hopkins University, will oversee the quality and academic integrity of educational and research programs at BayCare, and provide visionary leadership to drive academic excellence, partnerships, and continuous improvement in his new role that has been effective from Jan. 6.

“I was drawn to BayCare Health System by its nationally recognized health care services that set the standard for high-quality, compassionate care,” Kutty said. “I am honored to serve in [the] Vice President and Chief Academic officer role at BayCare. I am committed to fostering a collaborative, innovative environment for clinical research, education and scholarly activity within the 16-hospital system,” Kutty added, who will be serving under Dr. Sowmya Viswanathan, the chief physician executive at BayCare.
BayCare is a leading not-for-profit health care system founded in 1997 that connects individuals and families to a wide range of services at 16 hospitals and hundreds of other convenient locations throughout the Tampa Bay and West Central Florida regions.
Dr. Kutty’s career has included serving in the roles of physician-scientist, clinician, and academic leader. He is an alumnus of Calicut Medical College in India and has trained in reputed hospitals and Universities in Australia, Canada and the United States.

A world expert in cardiovascular imaging with consistent grant funding from the National Institutes of Health, and over 440 peer-reviewed publications and three patents to his name, Dr. Kutty is passionate about patient outcomes and evidence-based assessment of new technologies.
Dr. Kutty holds a master’s degree in healthcare management from Harvard University, training in artificial intelligence from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and is an Aresty Scholar of the Wharton School. He is also part of global healthcare ventures in India, Brazil and the Middle East.
