He wrote in a post on X:
“Harvard has set an example for other higher-ed institutions – rejecting an unlawful and ham-handed attempt to stifle academic freedom, while taking concrete steps to make sure all students at Harvard can benefit from an environment of intellectual inquiry, rigorous debate and mutual respect. Let’s hope other institutions follow suit.”
His comments reportedly came after Harvard decided to fight the White House’s demands that it crack down on alleged antisemitism and civil rights violations. It is the first major U.S. university to defy pressure from the White House to change its policies.
The Trump administration has been threatening several top universities in the country with funding freezes if they do not crack down on antisemitism on campus, among other broader demands. Columbia, Brown, and University of California are some of the universities that have seen major funding cuts.
What is federal funding for universities?
Federal funding for universities in the United States refers to financial support provided by the federal government to higher education institutions. This funding serves multiple purposes, including support for scientific research, student financial aid, and institutional development. A significant portion is allocated to research grants through agencies such as the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Department of Energy. These grants enable universities to conduct cutting-edge research in science, technology, medicine, and other fields.

Another major component is student aid, including Pell Grants, federal student loans, and work-study programs, which help make higher education more accessible and affordable. Some federal funding also goes directly to universities to support specific programs, infrastructure improvements, or minority-serving institutions.
Federal funding plays a crucial role in advancing education, promoting innovation, and maintaining the global competitiveness of U.S. universities. It supports both the academic mission and economic impact of higher education.
