OpenAI launched the GPT-5.2 artificial intelligence model on Thursday. The company said the new model is expected to bring even more economic value for users, as it is better at creating spreadsheets, building presentations and handling complex multi-step projects.
OpenAI called GPT-5.2 “the most capable model series yet for professional knowledge work.” “Already, the average ChatGPT Enterprise user says AI saves them 40–60 minutes a day, and heavy users say it saves them more than 10 hours a week. We designed GPT‑5.2 to unlock even more economic value for people; it’s better at creating spreadsheets, building presentations, writing code, perceiving images, understanding long contexts, using tools, and handling complex, multi-step projects,” the company said in a blog post.

The launch comes after OpenAI CEO Sam Altman reportedly issued an internal “code red” in early December pausing non‑core projects and redirecting teams to accelerate development in response to Google’s Gemini 3. The Code Red memo said OpenAI will release a new reasoning model next week that beats Google’s Gemini 3 in internal evaluations, and acknowledged the company still needs to make major improvements to the ChatGPT experience.
“We announced this code red to really signal to the company that we want to martial resources in one particular area, and that’s a way to really define priorities and define things that can be deprioritized,” Fidji Simo, CEO of applications at OpenAI, told reporters in a briefing on Thursday, according to CNBC. “We have had an increase in resources focused on ChatGPT in general, I would say that helps with the release of this model, but that’s not the reason it’s coming out this week in particular.”

Google recently released its latest model Gemini 3 in a sweeping day-one rollout across a large swath of Google’s ecosystem with its billions of users, including what it said was its fastest-ever deployment into Google Search.
“Gemini 3 has had less of an impact on our metrics than we feared,” Altman said in an interview with CNBC on Thursday, alongside Disney CEO Bob Iger. He says OpenAI will exit code red by January.
Disney said on Thursday it is investing $1 billion in OpenAI and will let the startup use characters from Star Wars, Pixar and Marvel franchises in its Sora AI video generator. Meanwhile OpenAI also said that it currently has no plans to drop GPT‑5.1, GPT‑5, or GPT‑4.1 from its application programming interface. GPT-5.2 Instant, Thinking, and Pro will begin rolling out in ChatGPT on Thursday, beginning with paid plans.
