It looks like French media group Canal+ doesn’t seem to care about the artistic implications of using GenAI. Canal+ on Wednesday unveiled multi-year agreements with Alphabet’s Google Cloud and OpenAI to integrate generative artificial intelligence into its production workflows and streaming service.
What is Canal+?
Canal+ S.A. is a major French media and entertainment company based in Issy-les-Moulineaux, near Paris. Founded in 1984, the company began as a premium subscription television channel but has grown into a global media group involved in broadcasting, film production, streaming services, and content distribution.
Canal+ operates pay-TV channels, streaming platforms, and television production businesses across Europe, Africa, and parts of Asia. The company produces and distributes films and TV series through its subsidiary StudioCanal, one of Europe’s largest film studios. It also owns or has stakes in several media and technology companies, including the video platform Dailymotion and streaming services in multiple regions.

The group plays a significant role in the French entertainment industry, financing a large share of films produced in France and broadcasting major sporting events, movies, and original television series. Originally part of the French conglomerate Vivendi, Canal+ became an independent company in 2024, though the Bolloré family remains a major shareholder.
The company is seeking to rival Netflix’s recommendation algorithms and pursue a goal of reaching 100 million subscribers by 2030.
The partnerships are “very complementary,” CEO Maxime Sadda told Reuters, with Google focused on data extraction and OpenAI powering search recommendation to improve subscriber experience.

The move by Canal+ to integrate generative AI into its production and streaming workflows marks a clear strategic shift toward data-driven content creation and personalization. By leveraging AI technologies from Google Cloud and OpenAI, Canal+ is positioning itself to enhance both the efficiency of production processes and the user experience for subscribers. Generative AI can streamline tasks such as scriptwriting assistance, automated editing, content summarization, and recommendation modeling, allowing the company to produce more content faster while maintaining a high level of personalization.
For Canal+, these AI capabilities are not just operational tools—they also have strategic implications for competitiveness. By improving recommendation systems, the company can more effectively retain subscribers and engage viewers, which is crucial in the highly competitive streaming landscape dominated by global platforms such as Netflix and Disney+. A better algorithm-driven experience could directly influence viewer satisfaction, viewing time, and subscription growth, though the exact impact is yet to be seen.
