Indian American interventional cardiologist Dr. Adhir Shroff, a pioneer in radial-artery catheterization and a long-standing faculty member, has taken over as the interim chief of the Division of Cardiology at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC).
Since joining the UIC faculty in 2004, Shroff has become a fixture in the Chicago medical community. Prior to the appointment he served as a professor of clinical medicine and the chief of clinical service for the division.
His elevation to interim chief is a progression for a physician who spent 15 years directing the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories at UI Health, where he modernized procedural protocols.
Shroff’s professional journey reflects a deep connection to his Indian heritage. Of Gujarati descent, his career path illustrates the rigorous academic standards often associated with the Indian American diaspora.
While he earned his medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, his training took him across the country’s most prestigious institutions. He served as chief resident at the University of Michigan and later completed fellowships in cardiology and interventional cardiology at Harvard Medical School’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
Seeking to bridge the gap between clinical excellence and healthcare administration, Shroff also earned a Master of Public Health from Harvard. He is currently pursuing advanced finance training at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, highlighting a commitment to understanding the complex economics of modern medicine.

At the core of Shroff’s work is a “human first” approach to surgery. He is recognized nationally for his leadership in radial-artery catheterization a technique that accesses the heart through the wrist rather than the groin.
This “radial-first” method, which he helped pioneer, significantly reduces recovery times and minimizes complications, making life-saving procedures less invasive for patients.
Beyond the operating room, Shroff is a key member of the Structural Heart Disease Program, where he focuses on expanding community outreach. He has been a dedicated mentor throughout his career, training hundreds of future cardiologists and securing grant funding to develop interdisciplinary educational programs.
Leading the Division of Cardiology, Shroff is expected to focus on fostering diversity in medical research and ensuring equitable access to cardiovascular care across the region. His appointment comes at a time when UIC continues to expand its footprint as a premier center for heart health and innovation.
