A Republican candidate in Florida’s 2026 gubernatorial race is facing intense backlash after a video surfaced showing him making a racially charged remark to a Black voter during a campaign interaction.
James Fishback, a GOP candidate and investor, drew widespread criticism after he told a Black man he “should be lynched” during a heated exchange captured on video. The remark, which quickly spread online, has sparked outrage among political opponents and civil rights advocates.
The confrontation reportedly began when the voter questioned Fishback about allegations concerning his personal conduct. In response, the candidate made the inflammatory statement, escalating the situation and drawing condemnation across social media and political circles.

“I don’t want you ever smashing girls, teenage girls, in our state ever again, so promise me never smash a minor again,” Tajy TV told Fishback. The furious GOP candidate replied, saying, “Why haven’t I been arrested? You should be lynched; you should be lynched for lying about me like that.”
Critics argue that the comment reflects deeply troubling rhetoric, particularly given the historical context of lynching in the United States. The phrase carries a legacy of racial violence, especially against Black Americans, making its use in modern political discourse especially contentious.
Fishback, who entered the race in late 2025, has already attracted attention for controversial positions and statements during his campaign. He has positioned himself as a strong supporter of conservative policies and has aligned himself with prominent right-wing figures.
The latest incident, however, marks a significant escalation in scrutiny. Political analysts say such controversies could influence voter perception in an already competitive Republican primary. While some supporters have dismissed the backlash as politically motivated, others within the party have remained silent or distanced themselves from the remarks.

The video’s circulation has also reignited broader debates about political rhetoric and accountability. Advocacy groups have called for clearer standards regarding language used by candidates, emphasizing the potential impact on public discourse and community relations.
Despite the growing criticism, Fishback has not fully withdrawn from the race. His campaign continues to engage voters, though the long-term impact of the controversy remains uncertain. As the election cycle progresses, the incident is likely to remain a focal point in discussions about leadership, conduct, and the tone of political campaigning in Florida.
