Zohran Mamdani is putting pressure on two New York City landlords after years of tenant complaints tied to unsafe living conditions across multiple buildings.
In a post shared on X, Mamdani accused landlords Karan Singh and Rajmattie Persaud of allowing serious housing problems to continue unchecked in their properties.
According to him, the pair appeared on the Public Advocate’s “Worst Landlords” list and faced more than 1,000 housing violations tied to issues including lack of heat, no hot water, hazardous mold, lead paint, broken elevators in high-rise buildings, as well as infestations involving roaches and mice.
“Karan Singh and Rajmattie Persaud are on the Public Advocates’ ‘Worst Landlords’ list. They have over a thousand violations for lack of heat, lack of hot water, hazardous mold, lead paint, broken elevators in 17-story buildings, roaches, and mice,” Mamdani wrote.

He added that many renters had spent years dealing with repeated ownership changes, foreclosures, and unresolved repair issues.
“For too long, renters have cycled through bad owners and foreclosures. Not anymore,” he said.
Mamdani also announced that a Chief Restructuring Officer has now been appointed to oversee repairs in the buildings connected to the landlords. According to his statement, funds were restrained from the owners’ bank accounts and will now be redirected toward fixing the conditions tenants have complained about for years.
“A Chief Restructuring Officer has been appointed to ensure the repairs to Singh and Persaud’s buildings are made. We restrained funds from the owners’ bank accounts, which will be used by the
Chief Restructuring Officer to make repairs,” he wrote.
Alongside the statement, Mamdani shared two campaign-style posters highlighting the legal and financial action taken against the landlords.

One poster claimed the city had secured “$31 million dollars largest civil penalty against negligent landlords in New York City history.”
Another poster carried the message: “Time’s up for bad landlords Karan Singh & Rajmattie Persaud,” before listing repairs that were ordered, including elevator fixes, restoration of heat and hot water, mold removal, lead paint treatment, and pest extermination measures.
The graphic also stated that a Chief Restructuring Officer had been appointed to make sure the repairs are completed and that the work would be “paid for by Karan Singh and Rajmattie Persaud.”
The latest action comes as housing conditions and tenant protections continue to remain a major issue across New York City, especially in aging apartment buildings where residents have repeatedly raised concerns over safety and maintenance failures.
