Kash Patel engaged in a tense public confrontation with Senator Chris Van Hollen during a Senate budget hearing after Democratic lawmakers questioned Patel over reports alleging excessive drinking and unexplained absences while serving as FBI director.
The exchange unfolded during a Senate Appropriations Committee hearing focused on the Justice Department’s 2027 budget requests, including funding for the FBI, DEA, ATF, and U.S. Marshals Service.
Van Hollen referenced a recent report published by The Atlantic alleging Patel had “alarmed colleagues with episodes of excessive drinking and unexplained absences,” claims Patel has strongly denied
“Director Patel, I don’t care one bit about your private life,” Van Hollen said during the hearing. “I don’t give a damn what you do on your own time and your own dime, unless and until it interferes with your public responsibilities.
Patel rejected the allegations as “unequivocally, categorically false” and confirmed he has filed a $250 million defamation lawsuit against The Atlantic and the reporter behind the story.

The confrontation escalated after Patel accused Van Hollen of hypocrisy, referencing the senator’s past trip to El Salvador and alleging he had consumed alcohol during official meetings funded by taxpayers.
“The next time you run up a $7,000 bar tab, we can talk about it,” Patel told the senator during the hearing.
Van Hollen responded by calling Patel’s accusations “provably false” and said the cited expense related to a campaign-funded staff event rather than taxpayer spending.
At one point, Van Hollen challenged Patel to take an alcohol dependency assessment commonly used in the military. “I’ll take any test you’re willing to,” Patel replied. “Let’s go. Side by side.”
The hearing reflected growing political scrutiny surrounding Patel’s leadership since taking over the FBI earlier this year. Democrats questioned his handling of personnel decisions, alleged investigations involving journalists, and recent immigration- and election-related operations. Republicans, meanwhile, defended Patel and highlighted falling crime rates and FBI arrest statistics under his tenure.

Patel also faced questions about a controversial trip to the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy, where viral videos showed him celebrating with the U.S. men’s hockey team while drinking beer in the locker room. Patel defended the trip by saying it involved coordination tied to the extradition of a cybercrime suspect connected to Chinese intelligence operations.
The public clash quickly spread across social media and cable news, becoming one of the most combative congressional hearings involving an FBI director recently.
The dispute also broadens partisan tensions over law enforcement leadership, government transparency, and political oversight as the FBI continues facing pressure from both parties over its evolving role in national security and domestic investigations.
