A 45-year-old Indian woman from Gujarat was shot dead during a suspected robbery at a supermarket in Virginia, leaving her family and members of the Gujarati community in the United States devastated. The victim, identified as Meghnaben Patel, had been working at the store for nearly 10 years.
Patel was originally from Jantral village in Gujarat’s Mehsana district. Her parents, Karsanbhai Patel and Kapilaben, still live in the village, where news of her death spread quickly and left residents in mourning. She is survived by her husband, Upendrabhai Patel, and their two children, daughter Nakshiben and son Smith.

The shooting took place on May 23, 2026, inside a supermarket that was nearly empty at the time of the attack. Local police reached the scene soon after receiving information about the incident. Officers sealed off the area and began an investigation, while special teams were assigned to identify and arrest the gunman. Authorities have not yet released the suspect’s identity.
Surveillance footage from the store, which surfaced online after the incident, captured the moments leading up to the shooting. The video shows a hooded man entering the supermarket while pretending to be a customer. He was dressed in animal-print or camouflage-style pants, gloves, a grey jacket, a face covering and a hat.
The suspect is seen calmly walking toward the counter where Patel was standing and speaking with her briefly. Seconds later, he pulls out a handgun and opens fire. Patel collapses behind the counter after being shot.

The footage also shows the attacker climbing over the counter and firing additional shots before backing away and running out of the store through the same entrance he used to enter. Several items from the store can be seen falling to the floor as the suspect flees the scene.
The killing has shocked both Patel’s hometown in Gujarat and the Indian American community in the United States. Residents in Jantral village gathered to support the grieving family, while community members in the U.S. expressed anger and sadness over the incident.
Patel is the fourth person from Gujarat to lose their life in the United States this year. Her death has renewed concerns about the safety of immigrant workers employed at convenience stores, gas stations and supermarkets across the country, many of whom continue to work late hours in isolated settings.
