A growing political clash over immigration enforcement is unfolding in New York as the Trump administration moves forward with plans to increase the presence of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) personnel in the city.
According to media report, Trump administration’s border czar Tom Homan said Monday that he had informed New York Governor Kathy Hochul about the planned deployment before she signed legislation last month aimed at restricting certain ICE operations in the state. The measure also prohibits ICE agents from wearing masks while conducting enforcement activities.

The proposal has sparked criticism from New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who argued that heightened immigration enforcement could create fear among immigrant communities at a time when the region is preparing to welcome thousands of international visitors for the FIFA World Cup. The New York metropolitan area is scheduled to host several matches, including the tournament’s championship game.
In a post on X, Mamdani defended the role immigrants play in the sport and in the city’s culture.
“Soccer would not exist without immigrants. Immigrants play and coach the game, work in the stadiums, fill the stands, and make celebrations like the World Cup possible. Six of the players on the US Men’s National Team are immigrants.
We will not allow ICE or anyone else to sow fear in our communities — especially at this moment. As the world comes to our city, we will stand proudly with our immigrant neighbors and reject these attacks for what they are: an attempt to divide us.”
The debate comes as immigration remains a central issue in the lead-up to major international sporting events in the United States. Some travelers , members and soccer fans have voiced frustration online over visa delays and denials despite planning trips connected to FIFA tournaments.
Others, however, have supported stricter immigration enforcement and criticized Mamdani’s remarks.
Among them was conservative commentator Tomi Lahren, host of “Tomi Lahren is Fearless” on OutKick and co-host of “Big Weekend Show,” who responded directly to the mayor’s post.
“Once again, immigrants and illegal aliens are very different things. It’s actually pretty insulting that you don’t know the difference, moron.

Also, how are illegal aliens who supposedly need to be in this country for refuge affording World Cup tickets?”
With the World Cup expected to bring a surge of international visitors, questions surrounding border security, visa access, and immigration enforcement are increasingly becoming part of the conversation, turning a global sporting spectacle into another ongoing flashpoint.
