A senior Google executive has left the company to join OpenAI, highlighting the intensifying battle for top artificial intelligence talent as major technology firms race to secure leadership in the rapidly evolving sector.
Sissie Hsiao, a longtime Google executive and vice president who played a key role in the company’s artificial intelligence efforts, has joined OpenAI after more than a decade at Google. The move comes despite Google’s reported attempts to retain her through a compensation package tied to the company’s broader AI investments.

Hsiao spent more than 18 years at Google and most recently led initiatives related to the company’s AI-powered products. She was closely associated with the developments of conversational AI technologies and helped oversee efforts that eventually contributed to the launch of Google’s Gemini chatbot and other generative AI services.
Her departure underscores the fierce competition among technology companies seeking experienced AI researchers, engineers and executives. Since the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022, companies including OpenAI, Google, Meta and Anthropic have aggressively recruited talent, often offering multimillion-dollar compensation packages and access to cutting-edge research projects.
Google recently finalized a multibillion-dollar agreement related to its AI business and has significantly increased spending on infrastructure, research and talent retention. Nevertheless, the company has faced growing competition from rivals looking to attract employees with expertise in large language models, machine learning systems and AI product development.
OpenAI has emerged as one of the biggest beneficiaries of the talent race. The company has recruited researchers and executives from several leading technology firms as it expands its product offerings and pursues new applications for generative AI.
