Apple permanently closed three retail stores in United States on June 20, citing deteriorating conditions at the shopping malls where the locations were based, marking a rare contraction in the company’s extensive retail network.
The affected stores were Apple Towson Town Center in Maryland, Apple North County in California and Apple Trumbull in Connecticut. The closures took end at the end of business on June 20, ending years of operation at each location.
Apple first announced the closures in April, saying it had made the “difficult decision” after evaluating conditions at the malls. The company pointed to the departure of other retailers and declining performance at Towson Town Centre, the shops at North County and Trumbull mall.

In a statement, Apple said it regularly reviews its retail footprint to ensure it can best serve customers while continuing to invest in new and upgraded stores worldwide. The company emphasized that the closures do not signal a broader retreat from brick-and-mortar retailing. Over the past year, Apple has opened new stores and renovated existing locations in multiple markets.
The closure of the Towson Town Center location has attracted particular attention because it was the first Apple retail store in the United States where employees successfully voted to unionize. Workers at the Maryland store joined the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers in 2022 and later negotiated a collective bargaining agreement with the company.

Union leaders criticized the decision, arguing that the shutdown raises concerns about the future of organized labor within Apple’s retail operations. Apple has said Towson employees will be eligible to apply for other positions within the company in accordance with the terms of the labor agreement. Employees at the Connecticut and California locations will continue working at nearby Apple stores.
The closures come as many shopping malls across the United States continue to struggle with declining foot traffic, changing consumer habits and the departure of major retail tenants. Apple cited these broader challenges as a key factor behind its decision.
Despite closing the three stores, Apple continues to maintain one of the largest retail networks in the technology industry, with hundreds of locations worldwide. The company has said it remains committed to expanding and modernizing its retail presence while adapting to changes in consumer behavior and local market conditions.
