Elon Musk said SpaceX could one day be worth “more than the rest of Earth if we accomplish our goals,” responding to a post on X that questioned the company’s reported deal with artificial intelligence startup Anthropic.
The comment came after X user Thomas D. expressed skepticism about the reported agreement, suggesting it could prove costly for Anthropic.
“Too early to tell right now but I wonder if History will look back at this $7.5-40B Anthropic/SpaceXai deal as the biggest unforced error of the AI era,” Thomas D. wrote. “Did the management team think XAI was too far from the frontier to be a real threat? Otherwise why give so much money to a direct competitor?” He argued that xAI’s Grok models are rapidly closing the gap with leading AI systems and suggested Anthropic could end up strengthening a direct competitor.

Anthropic signed a deal in May to purchase 300 megawatts of computing capacity—the full output of xAI’s Colossus 1 data center near Memphis, Tennessee. According to reports, Anthropic agreed to pay $1.25 billion per month through May 2029, a deal estimated to generate about $40 billion in revenue for xAI. (Musk’s xAI merged with SpaceX in February.)
At the time, Musk dismissed concerns that the agreement posed a competitive risk, saying he admired Anthropic despite his previous criticism of the AI company.
Responding to Musk’s claim that SpaceX would be “worth more than the rest of Earth,” Thomas D. argued that the deal underscored his concerns. “That’s exactly my point. Why would the competition give you money at the risk of accelerating that timeline much further?” he wrote. He added that Anthropic may believe “that it will benefit them more in the end or that they can beat SpaceX before it matters.”

“Either way, that’s an interesting bet,” he said.
Musk did not elaborate on what he meant by saying SpaceX would be worth “more than Earth.” His post drew skepticism from some X users. One commenter wrote, “Yep, just like DOGE was going to reduce government spending by $2 trillion, Cybertruck was going to cross $40 and sell 250,000 trucks annually and Starship was going to fly people around the world in 2019. Yada, yada, yada.”
Another user responded, “Nothing is worth more than Earth.”
