New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani took to X to condemn the killing of a 26-year-old Colombian man by an Immigration and Customs (ICE) agent in Maine.
Human rights groups identified the man killed in Biddeford on Monday as a Colombian national authorized to work in the US. Colombia’s embassy said it was in contact with American authorities and was providing consular assistance to his family.
“This morning in Biddeford, Maine, a 26-year-old man said goodbye to his wife and daughter and left for work. Moments later he was dead, shot in the head by ICE agents, the second man ICE has killed in six days,” Mamdani wrote. “ICE is killing our neighbors. ICE cannot be reformed. Abolish ICE.”
This isn’t the first time Mamdani condemned the agency’s actions. According to USA Today, last month the mayor said that New York City opposes the agency’s actions. This came after Tom Homan, the Trump administration’s border czar, said earlier this month a big sweep is planned for the city.

“You’re going to see more ICE agents than you’ve ever seen in New York City, and it’s coming,” he said on Fox News. “I just reviewed an operation plan, I’m not going to tell you exactly when it’s going to happen, but it’s coming.” Mamdani responded to this saying that the city does not just oppose the actions of ICE, but “we are not going to be complicit with those actions either.” He added that this includes ensuring every city agency complies with their “sanctuary city policies.”
“It means that we do not allow ICE agents into our schools, our hospitals, our city property unless they can provide a judicial warrant signed by a judge,” he said. “It means that we don’t assist ICE with their civil immigration enforcement.”
ICE said about the incident in Maine that agents were watching an address for a person with a final order of removal in Biddeford at around 07:00 EDT (11:00 GMT) on Monday. When the agency tried to stop someone driving from that address, “the vehicle attempted to flee the scene and, fearing for public safety, an officer discharged his weapon”, ICE said, adding “the driver of the vehicle was struck”.
The inspector general’s office for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which oversees ICE, is taking over the investigation, according to Senator Susan Collins, a Republican representing Maine.

Fellow Maine Senator Angus King, a political independent, said he was initially told by DHS chief Markwayne Mullin that the person who was shot dead was a target of an arrest warrant in an immigration operation. But hours later, King said Mullin called him to say the man was actually not the target of a warrant, his office told the BBC.
This incident comes a week after an ICE officer fatally shot 52-year-old builder Lorenzo Salgado Araujo as he was driving to a construction site in Houston. Federal officials later acknowledged that the Mexican man was not the intended target of the enforcement operation, but they claimed he had tried to run over an ICE agent.
Earlier this year, ICE came under fire for the killing of two U.S. citizens, Renee Good and Alex Pretti.
