The 2026 Major League Cricket season comes down to one final contest as Los Angeles Knight Riders and Washington Freedom prepare to battle for the championship. While the Knight Riders are chasing their first MLC title in their maiden final appearance, Washington Freedom return to the title clash for a third consecutive season, bringing experience and a proven track record on the league’s biggest stage.
Los Angeles Knight Riders secured their place in the final with a thrilling seven-run victory over San Francisco Unicorns in Qualifier 1. Washington Freedom followed suit by defeating the Unicorns by the same margin in Qualifier 2, setting up a blockbuster meeting between two of the tournament’s strongest sides.
The final also marks a significant milestone for Los Angeles Knight Riders, who have reached the Major League Cricket championship match for the first time since the league was launched. Their playoff triumph over San Francisco capped a breakthrough campaign and earned them a maiden shot at the title. Washington Freedom, meanwhile, are no strangers to the occasion. They will be appearing in their third straight MLC final after winning the championship in 2024 and finishing runners-up in 2025, making them one of the league’s most consistent teams.

Los Angeles head into the decider on the back of a confident batting display in Qualifier 1. After early setbacks that saw Andre Fletcher and Matthew Tromp dismissed cheaply, Colin Munro steadied the innings with a composed 51 off 44 balls. Andre Russell then took charge with a powerful 62 from 50 deliveries before Rovman Powell produced a breathtaking unbeaten 50 off just 15 balls, helping the Knight Riders post 187/3.
The Knight Riders’ bowlers then held their nerve in a tense chase. Sunil Narine struck twice in the opening over to remove Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Finn Allen without a run on the board, putting San Francisco under immediate pressure. Although Matthew Short battled to an unbeaten 94 and Sanjay Krishnamurthy added 65, Los Angeles defended the target to seal a memorable victory.
Munro has been the driving force behind the Knight Riders’ batting campaign, scoring 398 runs this season. Russell has been equally influential with the ball, leading the team’s wicket charts with 18 dismissals while continuing to deliver crucial contributions as an all-rounder.
Washington Freedom have relied on a balanced squad throughout the tournament. Wicketkeeper-batter Andries Gous has been their standout performer with the bat, amassing 507 runs to lead the team’s scoring charts. Left-arm pacer Saurabh Netravalkar has spearheaded the bowling attack with 14 wickets and will once again be central to Freedom’s hopes in the final.
Several key individual battles could shape the outcome of the championship. Munro’s consistency at the top will be tested by Netravalkar’s disciplined new-ball spell, while Russell’s ability to influence the game with both bat and ball makes him one of the biggest threats for Washington. Freedom, however, possess no shortage of match-winners, with Glenn Maxwell, Steve Smith, Marco Jansen and Rachin Ravindra capable of turning the contest in their favor.
With Los Angeles Knight Riders carrying the confidence of a historic playoff win and Washington Freedom aiming to reclaim the trophy with their wealth of finals experience, the Major League Cricket 2026 final promises a fitting conclusion to the season.
