George Mason University bioengineering professor Siddhartha Sikdar has been elected to the Virginia Academy of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (VASEM), an organization that convenes top experts to provide evidence-based guidance to state leaders.
Sikdar, a Distinguished University Professor in the College of Engineering and Computing and co-director of the Center for MedTech Innovation, was selected for his research into bioengineering solutions that improve human health.
His lab focuses on advanced imaging systems and wearable sensors that monitor brain-body interactions. These tools aim to enhance rehabilitation for individuals living with stroke, spinal cord injury, chronic pain, and limb loss. Sikdar’s election to VASEM gives him an opportunity to advise policymakers on biomedical and healthcare technology strategies across Virginia.

Sikdar expressed eager anticipation to help shape state health policy while centering patient voices. He noted that his goal is to bring an interdisciplinary, community-engaged research perspective to state policy discussions where patients and community partners are frequently excluded.
Sikdar’s academic journey reflects a strong foundation in both Indian and American higher education. He earned his Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur in 1997.
Moving to the United States for advanced studies, he completed his master’s degree in electrical engineering in 2001 and earned his doctorate in electrical engineering in 2005 from the University of Washington in Seattle.

His work spans engineering, neuroscience, and clinical applications, bridging theoretical technology with real-world healthcare solutions. At George Mason, his research contributes directly to medical device innovations, including noninvasive prostheses and diagnostic tools aimed at restoring mobility and improving patient quality of life.
The 2026 VASEM cohort also recognized two other George Mason faculty members: Liping Di, a Distinguished University Professor of geography and geoinformation science in the College of Science, and Melissa J. Perry, dean and professor in the College of Public Health.
Their induction brings the total number of George Mason faculty members elected to VASEM to 13, showcasing the university’s growing influence on state scientific research and health policy. The new class of inductees will be formally recognized during the annual VASEM Summit taking place this fall.
