Anthropic is entering a $10 billion deal with AI cloud startup Volta, according to Bloomberg. Volta, which was founded in 2026, will provide cloud compute to the Claude-maker over a six-year period.
Crypto-mining company Bitdeer is partnering with Volta to develop the data center to provide the compute capacity. The facility, which will be fueled by Nvidia’s Vera Rubin systems, will be located in Norway and will deliver a 133-megawatt capacity. Volta is part of Nvidia’s Cloud Partner program, which is a consortium of AI cloud providers that use Nvidia’s GPUs in their data centers.
Volta describes itself as a vertically integrated AI infrastructure business set up to finance, build, and operate AI factories. It operates on the rent-a-GPU model like Nscale and CoreWeave, and has some notable backers.
When it emerged from stealth mode, Volta said it had raised about $300 million across its seed and Series A rounds, reaching a valuation of $2.4 billion. Andreessen Horowitz and Nvidia led the latest round, with other investors including Michael Dell’s family office.
Volta has said that it has created “the world’s first fully vertically integrated AI infrastructure platform, extending beyond technology into capital formation.” By this, Volta means combining infrastructure finance, datacenters, compute, software, and operations under one roof. It claims this will accelerate deployment and reduce financing costs.
“Compute has become a new infrastructure asset class, with AI models and applications as the verticals built on top,” said founder and CEO Ricard Boada.
According to TechCrunch, Anthropic has been trying to aggressively expand its compute capacity over the last several months amid intensifying competition. The firm had also inked compute deals with other companies like Amazon and SpaceX.
Back in May, Anthropic signed a deal with SpaceX to use all of the compute capacity at their Colossus 1 data center. This gave it access to more than 300 megawatts of new capacity (over 220,000 Nvidia GPUs) within the month, helping improve capacity for Claude Pro and Claude Max subscribers.
In April, Amazon announced it signed a deal for Anthropic to secure up to 5 gigawatts (GW) of current and future generations of Amazon’s Trainium chips to train and power their advanced AI models. Amazon also said it was investing $5 billion in Anthropic at the time, and up to an additional $20 billion in the future.
