SpaceX’s Starlink is rapidly expanding its presence in commercial aviation, with 48 airlines now having announced partnerships or plans to bring the satellite company’s high-speed internet service to passengers, signaling a major shift in the in-flight Wi-Fi market.
The expansion means more travelers could soon have access to faster and more reliable internet while flying, including on long-haul routes where conventional connectivity has often struggled.
Starlink’s low-Earth-orbit satellite network is designed to provide high-speed, low-latency connectivity to aircraft, allowing passengers to browse the internet, stream video, make video calls and use other data-intensive services during flights.
The service has already gained traction among major international carriers. Airlines using or introducing Starlink include United Airlines, Air France, Qatar Airways, Emirates, Air New Zealand, Alaska Airlines and WestJet.

What passengers can expect
The most significant change for travelers is the potential for significantly faster in-flight internet. Starlink’s technology can support activities that have traditionally been difficult on aircraft, including streaming, online gaming and video conferencing.
United Airlines, one of the largest Starlink adopters, says its equipped aircraft can deliver speeds of up to 250 Mbps, with low latency and support for multiple connected devices. The airline expects Starlink to be available on three out of every four departures by the end of 2026, with its two-cabin fleet targeted for full installation by the end of 2027.
Some airlines are also offering the service at no additional charge. United has positioned Starlink as complimentary Wi-Fi for passengers, while Qatar Airways offers free Starlink connectivity on equipped flights through its passenger loyalty system.
However, passengers should not assume that every flight operated by a participating airline will have Starlink. Availability depends on whether the particular aircraft has been equipped with the necessary hardware and, in some markets, regulatory requirements.
American Airlines, for example, announced in May that it would begin installing Starlink on more than 500 narrowbody aircraft from the first quarter of 2027. The airline said the system would support streaming, browsing and real-time communications.

Starlink reshapes airline competition
The rapid adoption of Starlink is also increasing pressure on airlines to improve their connectivity offerings as they compete for passengers, particularly business and premium travelers.
Reuters reported in June that airlines were increasingly turning to high-speed satellite internet as they sought to improve the passenger experience and attract higher-value customers.
For travelers, the rollout could eventually make slow and unreliable aircraft Wi-Fi less common. But the transition will take time because airlines must equip individual aircraft, obtain required approvals and integrate the service into their existing onboard systems.
As more carriers adopt Starlink, passengers will increasingly be able to check whether their specific flight offers the service before boarding, making high-speed internet another factor that could influence airline and flight choices.
