Enterprise data and artificial intelligence company Alation has confirmed it suffered a cyberattack, days after an incident disrupted availability for some of its customers.
The company said it discovered unauthorized activity in one of its systems and is investigating what happened. Alation has not disclosed the attack method, the potential cause or whether customer data was accessed or stolen.
“Alation recently identified an isolated incident involving unauthorized activity in one of its systems,” the company said in a statement provided to TechCrunch by an external representative, Stephen Russell. “We are conducting a thorough investigation of what occurred and we will provide additional information as appropriate.”

The company has also not said how many customers may have been impacted or whether it has issued specific guidance to customers following the intrusion.
Alation provides data management software that allows enterprise users to search for files and information using natural-language queries. The company has expanded its platform into artificial intelligence, including tools designed to help businesses turn large amounts of unstructured data into usable information.
The company says more than 500 global businesses use its products, including about half of the Fortune 1000 companies in the United States.

The cyberattack came to light after Alation reported an unspecified incident on Tuesday that caused “degraded availability” for some customers. The company said at the time that the disruption was resolved within an hour.
The latest disclosure leaves several key questions unanswered, including whether attackers obtained sensitive business information and how they gained unauthorized access.
Alation’s investigation is continuing, and the company said it would provide additional information as appropriate.
