Milo Yiannopoulos, the British-born conservative provocateur who rose to prominence as a prominent figure in the American alt-right, has been detained by U.S. immigration authorities after overstaying his visa.
Yiannopoulos was detained by ICE agents on August 27 at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
According to DHS, Yiannopoulos entered the United States legally through New York City on May 14, 2019. Authorities said he later remained in the country beyond the period he was authorized to stay.
DHS said the immigration court ordered Yiannopoulos’ removal on July 22 after he did not appear for a scheduled hearing. He remains in ICE custody as officials move forward with the deportation process.
The agency also used the announcement to promote the Trump administration’s self-deportation program, saying people who are in the country illegally can use the CBP Home app to arrange their departure. DHS said the government is offering eligible individuals $3,000 and a free flight to leave the United States voluntarily.
The arrest quickly became a subject of debate on social media, particularly among conservative users who pointed to Yiannopoulos’ earlier support for President Donald Trump.
One of the commenters criticized the decision to target Yiannopoulos while raising concerns about immigration enforcement elsewhere.

“You surrendered Minnesota to disgusting Somalians who stole billions in federal funds and let them all go… but you can target and arrest the White guy with a brain tumor who helped get Trump elected in 2016 because he’s critical of Israel and because Laura Loomer told you to.
“You’re Worthless. These aren’t the kind of immigrants we want deported.”
Another user questioned why ICE was focusing on Yiannopoulos while accusing the country of allowing large numbers of other immigrants to enter.
“Hahaha the country has been flooded with Muslims, Africans, and Haitians, and this is who you arrest!!!??? Milo was arrested for criticizing Israel and the Epstein class. You are proving his point!
“America is occupied.”
Others also came to Yiannopoulos’ defense, with one commenter highlighting his role in the early Trump movement.
“Milo was a huge supporter of Trump early. He had a huge audience in 2016 and continued to move further right wing since.
“My city is filled with alien foreigners and ICE is deporting a white guy that supported Trump.
“Total joke of a country here.”
The controversy has also drawn attention to Yiannopoulos’ long and turbulent relationship with the American conservative movement.
Yiannopoulos became a highly visible figure in conservative media during the mid-2010s, particularly through his work at Breitbart News and his appearances at conservative events. He developed a large following online while becoming known for inflammatory statements and confrontational political commentary.
His career in the United States has also been marked by repeated controversies, platform restrictions and disputes with other figures on the political right.
Laura Loomer, a conservative activist who has publicly feuded with Yiannopoulos, claimed she had previously alerted authorities about his immigration status.
In a post on X, Loomer wrote:
“Illegal alien Milo Yiannopoulos has been detained by ICE.
“I was the first person to report on the fact that Milo was in the US illegally where he incited violence against President Trump and worked for Marjorie Traitor Greene.
“Recently, Candace Owens invited this illegal alien into her home.
“When Milo called for me to be assassinated, I reported him to ICE and the FBI. I told you all that Milo was an illegal alien. He was detained in Louisiana by @ICEgov.
“Milo is going to be deported back to the UK where he can live among the Muslims he has recently chosen to embrace.”
The case has created an unusual political moment. Yiannopoulos built much of his public identity around aggressive immigration restrictions and support for the broader nationalist wing of the conservative movement. His detention now places his own immigration status at the center of the political discussion surrounding him.
The 41-year-old British political figure is expected to be removed from the United States following the final removal order. Reports later indicated that he was flown back to the United Kingdom and could face a lengthy or permanent restriction on returning to the United States.
