Oracle is back with another round of layoffs.
The software giant is once again facing growing speculation over job cuts as it tries to control costs while spending billions of dollars to expand its artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Oracle expects its 2026 restructuring program to cost about $2.8 billion, according to Bloomberg, significantly higher than the roughly $2.1 billion it has already recognized. The additional $700 million is tied to further restructuring measures, with severance expected to account for a large portion of the expense.
The timing is notable. Oracle is simultaneously pursuing an aggressive expansion of AI data centers to meet soaring demand, including infrastructure tied to major customers such as OpenAI. That push requires enormous amounts of capital, putting additional pressure on the company’s cash position.
For Oracle employees, however, the AI boom is coming with a very different reality.
While the company races to build more infrastructure for the next generation of AI, its workforce has already been shrinking.

Oracle had about 49,000 employees in the U.S. and roughly 92,000 internationally at the end of May, giving it a global workforce of around 141,000. That was approximately 21,000 fewer employees than a year earlier.
The company has already eliminated thousands of jobs this year as it looks to preserve cash and improve efficiency. Now, another round of cuts appears to be looming, although Oracle has not officially announced a new layoff wave.
During Thursday’s earnings call, Oracle CFO Hilary Maxson pointed to what she called “simplification and efficiency actions” as the company works to lower expenses and protect margins.
Those comments have added fuel to concerns that more employees could soon be shown the door.
Reports earlier this year suggested Oracle was preparing for another major restructuring after its May 2026 layoffs. September 1 was initially rumored to be a potential date for another announcement. A Business Insider report said managers had been asked to identify positions that could be eliminated, with some teams reportedly looking at cuts affecting double-digit percentages of their workforce.
September 1 came and went without the expected announcement.
That has not stopped the speculation.
Employees and users on Reddit are now pointing to September 14 and September 15 as possible dates for another Oracle layoff announcement. There is no official confirmation from Oracle that either date will bring another round of job cuts, meaning the claims remain speculation.
Still, the company’s rising restructuring bill is difficult to ignore.
And if another large-scale reduction does happen, Indian employees could be among those watching closely.
Oracle has a major workforce in India, spanning engineering, cloud operations, technology and support roles. The company has already faced scrutiny over job cuts affecting its Indian operations, but there is currently no confirmed figure for how many employees in India could be affected by any new restructuring.
Oracle’s situation underscores a growing contradiction inside the technology industry: companies are spending unprecedented amounts to build the AI economy while simultaneously cutting jobs and demanding greater efficiency from their existing workforces.
For Oracle employees, the question now is whether the company’s next AI investment will create new opportunities or come with another round of pink slips.
