Global artificial intelligence stocks have fallen after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for a slowdown in the development of AI capabilities and other tech leaders backed the proposal. According to a CNBC report, investors are concerned that an industry-wide slowdown in AI development could have ripple effects for companies across the sector.
Amodei recently called for the pace of development of artificial intelligence models to slow down and be closely monitored. He wrote in an essay that developing AI was not in question, but that the risks associated with it were “serious” and that companies and governments must be given time to address them.
Amodei’s essay, titled We Must Pace the Frontier and published Saturday, proposed a three-point plan that included independent monitoring of AI models as they are developed, industry-wide regulation and global regulation.

Sam Altman and Elon Musk, the CEOs of competitors OpenAI and SpaceX, agreed with Amodei. “I agree with Dario that we need to pace the frontier,” Altman posted Saturday on X. “Committing to having independent evaluators with employee-like access is a great idea, and we will do the same.”
This comes shortly after Jason Coxon, an Anthropic researcher who previously worked at OpenAI, announced he was resigning. Coxon stated that neither company was behaving responsibly and that the people building AI “behave that it could kill all of us by the end of a decade.”
The impact on the stock market could be seen among South Korean companies SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics, which closed down more than 6% and 4%, respectively. Shares of SoftBank, one of the biggest investors in OpenAI, fell 10% in Japan.
In Europe, semiconductor and other AI-related stocks also fell sharply in early trading. Chip equipment giant ASML fell more than 5%, Nokia was down around 8%, and Infineon dropped more than 7%. Other companies, including Siemens Energy and Schneider Electric, also saw their shares fall.

Major stocks also declined in the U.S. Micron dropped around 7%, Intel plunged 6%, while Nvidia fell more than 3%. Several other semiconductor companies also declined, while hyperscalers such as Amazon fell slightly.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump pushed back against calls for AI regulation and Amodei’s plea for an AI slowdown. “The only control or ‘guardrails’ that AI needs is a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT, and the U.S.A. has that, in spades!” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post.
“The Trump Administration has stopped AI ‘people’ from doing bad, or potentially bad, ‘things,’ like Dario (Anthropic!), who is now pretending to be a ‘perfect little angel’ – and we will continue to do so!” Trump wrote.
