Former Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer is betting that users’ camera rolls can reveal more about their lives than their inboxes. Her startup Dazzle is developing an AI assistant that analyzes photos stored on users’ phones to build context and personalize its responses. The company raised $8 million in seed funding last December.
According to a TechCrunch report, Dazzle gets its information primarily from a single source — the user’s camera roll. “I think that photos are an underappreciated source of information,” Mayer said. “You’ll be surprised what we can learn about you and how good a job we can do with your photos.”

Mayer argues that if a photo is worth a thousand words, a camera roll is worth millions. By analysing photos stored on phones, Dazzle claims to understand users’ likes and preferences.
“We understand whether or not you like to ski, where your most recent trip was, what types of things your kids are into,” Mayer said.
Mayer’s previous startup, Sunshine, launched an AI-powered photo-sharing tool called Shine in 2024. The product was eventually shut down after criticism of its outdated design and limited adoption, but Mayer said it nevertheless built “interesting IP.”
The TechCrunch report said Mayer uses Dazzle to brainstorm family outings. By scanning her photos, she said the assistant deduced that her family loves escape rooms and subsequently suggested multiple locations in the San Francisco Bay Area that she had never heard of.
Mayer also said that amid security concerns surrounding products such as Instinct and Muse, users may feel more comfortable giving an AI access to their photo libraries than sensitive information such as emails and messages. She also emphasized that Dazzle prioritizes privacy and discards personal information that the AI flags as sensitive.
Dazzle AI was founded in 2025 by Mayer, whose previous experience includes Google and Yahoo. In December 2025, the company announced that it had raised $8 million in seed funding at a $35 million post-money valuation. The round was led by Kirsten Green of Forerunner, with participation from Kleiner Perkins, Greycroft, Offline Ventures, Slow Ventures and Bling Capital.

Mayer has said she is betting on lessons from Sunshine to help her build a more resilient and impactful business with Dazzle.
Before becoming Yahoo CEO, Mayer was Google’s 20th employee, where she helped design Google Search’s “look and feel” and oversaw the development of Google Maps and AdWords.
“I have had the rare privilege of being at two companies that really changed how people do things,” Mayer told TechCrunch. “Yahoo, for many, defined the internet. Google, in terms of Search and Maps, changed everything. I really aspire to build a product that has that kind of impact again.”
