Ramkumar Menon, an internationally recognized leader in reproductive biology and maternal-fetal health research, has been appointed the inaugural Director of the Center for Reproductive Health at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB).
“Dr. Menon brings exceptional scientific expertise, visionary leadership, and a distinguished record of innovation to this important role,” Antonio C. Bianco, Dean, John Sealy School of Medicine; and Senior Vice President of Health Affairs, stated.
His appointment marks a significant milestone as UTMB launches the Center for Reproductive Health to advance interdisciplinary research, education, and clinical innovation focused on improving outcomes for women, mothers, infants, and families, he wrote in a message to colleagues.

Under Dr. Menon’s leadership, the Center for Reproductive Health will advance the institution’s commitment to becoming a national leader in reproductive health research and innovation, according to the university.
The center will build strategic partnerships, support emerging investigators, and expand opportunities for interdisciplinary science that addresses some of the most pressing issues affecting reproductive and maternal health today.
Dr. Menon serves as Vice Chair for Research and Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Division Director of Basic Science Research, and Director of the March of Dimes Texas Collaborative Prematurity Research Center.
He has established an internationally recognized research program dedicated to understanding the biological mechanisms that contribute to pregnancy complications, including preterm birth.

His work has helped advance the field’s understanding of maternal-fetal health through discoveries in inflammation, oxidative stress, cellular senescence, and reproductive aging. He has pioneered reproductive organ-on-chip technologies as drug development tools to reduce the risk of preterm birth.
Dr. Menon received his doctorate in perinatal genetic epidemiology from the University of Aarhus in Aarhus, Denmark. He also completed training in microbiology and reproductive immunology at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio.
Prior to joining UTMB, Dr. Menon worked as Research Director for the Perinatal Research Center, at the Centennial Medical Center in Nashville, TN.
Dr. Menon has been recognized for his many contributions with multiple awards including the J. Christian Herr Award and March of Dimes Award, among others.
