Apple said it does not know when its new foldable iPhones will be back in stock as the company heads into the crucial Christmas shopping season. The iPhone Duo sold out within a week of its launch, prompting the company to warn of supply constraints involving key components. Apple admitted it was “really hard to predict when supply and demand will be in balance.”
Meanwhile, Apple CEO John Ternus said the company was facing an “unprecedented” increase in memory costs, including chip prices, as the artificial intelligence (AI) industry continues to invest billions of dollars in building data centers.
Apple launched the iPhone Duo in September, when Ternus took over from former CEO Tim Cook. Last week, the company acknowledged that some iPhone Duo devices had display problems and said it would replace affected units. The announcement followed social media reports of cracks developing along the middle of the screen, where the crease runs.

“We are aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units,” Apple said in a statement. “If users experience issues with their iPhone Duo display, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement.”
iFixit recently published a teardown of the iPhone Duo, revealing details about its hinge design that could help explain the reported screen cracks. The do-it-yourself repair group also described the Duo as the most repairable foldable device it had tested, although opening it would still be difficult.
Ternus said he was “thrilled” by the early response to the foldable phone. Chief Operating Officer Sabih Khan said the company was working hard to get the Duo “into the hands of our customers as quickly as possible.”

Apple’s results for the three months ended Sept. 26 did not include iPhone Duo sales, as the device was released at the end of October. However, the company said it had sold more iPhones globally over the past year than ever before.
Apple also said it was deepening its partnership with Perryman, a titanium producer supplying materials for the new foldable device. The move was seen as a sign of the company’s efforts to increase production and meet demand for the Duo.
“We’ve been thrilled with the early response from reviewers and customers, and we are working hard to get iPhone Duo into customers’ hands as quickly as we can,” Ternus said during his opening remarks.
Apple’s iPhone revenue rose 17% to $57 billion in the quarter.
