Los Angeles’ political landscape is set for a new chapter with Nithya Raman making history as the city’s first Indian American mayor-elect. But while her political journey has drawn national attention, there is another familiar name from the entertainment industry who could soon find himself in an unusual public role: her husband, Vali Chandrasekaran.
A television writer and producer with five Emmy nominations to his credit, Chandrasekaran has worked on some of America’s most popular comedy shows, including Modern Family, 30 Rock and The Four Seasons. His career in Hollywood offers an interesting contrast to Raman’s life in politics, bringing together two worlds that rarely share the same spotlight.
If Raman takes office, Chandrasekaran will become Los Angeles’ first gentleman, a role that could place the television writer closer to the political world while he remains connected to the entertainment industry.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Chandrasekaran graduated from Harvard University before beginning his professional career as a consultant at Boston Consulting Group (BCG). However, his interest in comedy writing eventually took him in a different direction.
He began writing television scripts and eventually secured an agent, opening the door to a career in entertainment. He later joined the sitcom My Name Is Earl as a writer and co-producer.

His television credits grew over the years, with writing and production work on several successful comedy series. His five Emmy nominations reflect his contributions to American television.
Beyond sitcoms, Chandrasekaran has also explored other forms of storytelling. In 2008, he co-authored the travel book The Ridiculous Race: 26,000 Miles, 2 Guides, 1 Globe, No Airplanes with fellow Harvard Lampoon alumnus Steve Hely.
He also created the graphic novel Genius Animals?, illustrated by Jun-Pierre Shiozawa, which received an Eisner Award nomination.
From Harvard romance to Los Angeles politics
Raman and Chandrasekaran’s story began long before either became a familiar name in their respective fields. The couple first met at Harvard University in 1999, where Chandrasekaran was associated with the university’s humour magazine, The Harvard Lampoon.
Their relationship had its share of ups and downs. The two reportedly separated during their college years but reconnected after graduation. They eventually married in 2010 and have since built a family together.
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Raman offered a glimpse into her husband’s affection for the city that could soon become her political responsibility.
“He loves the city more than me,” she said.
The remark offers an interesting insight into Chandrasekaran’s connection with Los Angeles, a city where the entertainment industry and politics frequently intersect.
His potential transition from Hollywood writer to the city’s first gentleman also adds an unusual dimension to Raman’s political milestone. While she prepares to take on one of the country’s most prominent municipal leadership roles, her husband brings a background in television comedy and storytelling to the public spotlight.
For Los Angeles, the couple represents an intersection of politics, entertainment and academia, with Raman making history in City Hall and Chandrasekaran bringing his Hollywood experience into the city’s political orbit.
