WASHINGTON, DC: A New Jersey teacher was rushed to the hospital after a student allegedly spiked her drink with Visine eye drops, making her sick, according to CBS New York.
According to the FDA, swallowing saline solution can cause a slew of health problems including nausea, vomiting, restricted breathing, lethargy, and in extreme cases, coma.
Tom Grosse told CBS his wife Kelly loves the students at Central Regional High School as if they were her own, which made it impossible to fathom why anyone would purposefully want to cause her any harm.
“I don’t really think she did anything to deserve this,†Grosse said. “Of course the whole thing is pretty upsetting to my wife,” he continued. He stated his wife’s condition was improving, but she was upset someone would do this to her.
“We were at the hospital for a few hours,” Grosse related.
Students said they couldn’t believe what had happened. “From what I understand he was just trying to pull a prank, but you should be careful with such things. She could have been seriously hurt,†Thomas Dono, 15, said.
As a result of such “poor decision making,” Superintendent Dr. Triantafillo Parlapanides stated the student is suspended until a board hearing is completed, at which point they will determine what the ultimate consequences will be.
The student was also taken into custody by Berkeley Township Police and charged with aggravated assault on a school board member. The student subsequently was released to his parents pending juvenile court proceedings.
