WASHINGTON, DC: A homeless man with a machete attacked a woman in Bryant Park in Manhattan, New York, Tuesday morning.
Authorities say the suspect started swinging the machete wildly just before noon, and a 31-year-old woman was slashed in the right arm, according to New York-based outlet WABC. The NYPD said the woman suffered an arm injury at around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.
The victim — who is believed to be of Korean descent — was subsequently taken to Bellevue Hospital to be treated for her non-life threatening injury, reported several local news outlets.
The suspect, identified as Frederick Young, in his 50s, was taken into custody on the south side of the park, opposite 60 West 40th Street, after Bryant Park security pursued him and put up barricades, disclosed WABC. He has one previous arrest for menacing.
Young was taken to a nearby precinct for questioning. No statements were made by the suspect, and charges against him are pending.
The famous park — which is the former home of New York Fashion Week — has seen its share of violence in the past.
A November 2013 shooting at the park’s ice rink injured two people, including a 14-year-old, and set off a veritable stampede as chaos ensued. Police said the shooter was a 16-year-old who had tried to rob one of the victims of his coat. The suspect, now 18, has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder.
