Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella witnessed firsthand the transformative impact of AI on agriculture during his recent visit to India, where he met with teams leveraging Microsoft’s AI tools to support farmers.
Nadella visited the Agricultural Development Trust (ADT) Baramati Agri Institute in Maharashtra, which collaborates with Microsoft to enhance sugarcane farming practices using AI. The initiative focuses on predicting weather patterns, combating pests, and optimizing harvests, offering sustainable solutions for Indian farmers.
In a social media post on Jan. 8, Nadella said, “It was great to meet the team at ADT Baramati today, who are using our AI tools to help farmers grow healthier, more sustainable harvests.”

Microsoft’s AI tools, according to the company’s statement, enable the institute to provide precision farming insights to sugarcane farmers, helping them make data-driven decisions. By combining localized weather predictions with pest control advisories, the project aims to boost yields while reducing environmental impact.
In a January 2024 farmers’ festival, ADT Baramati unveiled its AI project, “Farm of the Future”— about a dozen crops from sugarcane to tomato to okra, all grown with insights harnessed by a customized version of Microsoft’s AI product Azure Data Manager for Agriculture.
The platform integrates data from weather systems, soil conditions, and farm activity to provide actionable insights. By enabling precision farming practices, it supports sustainable solutions for sugarcane farmers at ADT.
Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service, which combines generative AI with agriculture-specific models, was also utilized, helping farmers make informed decisions about planting schedules, pest control, and irrigation, reducing costs while increasing productivity. Its capabilities are already reshaping farming approaches through localized intelligence.
Click2Cloud, an ecosystem partner, extends Microsoft’s AI and cloud capabilities by providing scalable digital infrastructure for agricultural innovation. Through Azure integration, Click2Cloud supports seamless deployment of AI tools, empowering organizations like ADT Baramati to deliver real-time benefits to farmers across India.
“For proponents of AI in farming, this is just the start,” the company noted, with local farmers hoping that maybe fewer young people will leave for the big cities as AI helps make farming in India more sustainable.
