Siemens executive Augustin Escobar has passed away in a helicopter crash in the Hudson River. Reportedly, a sightseeing helicopter carrying six people, including three children and Escobar plunged from the sky into the Hudson River on Thursday, turning a family outing above Manhattan’s misty skyline into a tragedy.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams said the family was visiting from Spain, “We are deeply saddened by the tragic helicopter crash in which Agustin Escobar and his family lost their lives. Our heartfelt condolences go out to all their loved ones,” a Siemens Mobility spokesperson said in a statement to CNN.
Who was Augustin Escobar?
Agustín Escobar, born in 1975 in Puertollano, Spain, was a highly respected business leader known for his impactful career at Siemens. He earned his degree in industrial engineering from Universidad Pontificia Comillas in Madrid and built a remarkable 25-year career at Siemens.

Escobar held key leadership positions, including CEO of Siemens Mobility Southwest Europe and President and CEO of Siemens Spain. He was instrumental in establishing Siemens’ technological center for sustainable mobility in Valencia, helping position the city as a hub for rail innovation. His leadership expanded Siemens’ presence in Spain, focusing on digital transformation and sustainable practices, and he played a significant role in strengthening the company’s competitive edge through strategic acquisitions and collaborations with global leaders in the tech and mobility sectors.
On April 10, Escobar’s life was tragically cut short in a helicopter crash over the Hudson River in New York City, along with his wife, Mercè Camprubí Montal, and their three children. The family was on vacation when the helicopter, a Bell 206L-4 LongRanger IV, experienced a mid-air structural failure and crashed.
Escobar’s death has deeply affected his colleagues at Siemens, his community in Puertollano, and the broader industrial sector. In recognition of his contributions, Escobar was honored as “Favorite Son” of Castilla-La Mancha in 2023.
